2 1/4 = 9/4 miles to the library
1/2 = 2/4 miles to the ice cream from the library
from ice cream to the house :
2/4 + 9/4 = 11/4 miles
total = 11/4 + 2/4 + 9/4
= 11/4 + 11/4
= 22/4
= 11/2
= 5 1/2
