I believe the answer is: The storyteller allows the audience to participate with cheers and applause

By giving cheers and applause, the audience able to interact with the story tellers and conveying the type of emotion that they felt during the process. This would make all audiences in the group feel included in the story telling process and it also provides the story tellers with some sort of clue on whether the audiences are enjoying the show or not.
