What technology do scientists use, only to measure ocean depth?

the easy way is to use sonar which is sound, they make a sound bounce off the bottom and time how long it takes to go back up

lasers don't work well because the water distortst the beam so it doesn't measure accurately

submersibles are expensive and can break, but they can be used

rope is silly
