+n
-984=-285+n
+285
-699=n

n is equal to -699

When you do this, you want to isolate one variable on one side of the equation. Add 984 to both sides, first. You get -n = 699.
You aren't done yet because the problem isn't complete until the variable is positive. To do that, multiply both sides by -1.
The answer is n = -699.
