In the Book Thief, the consequences of Hans not joining the Nazi party were both economic and social; he cannot make a decent living like the members of the party who sell with the party licence. Hans' refusal to join the party means he cannot sell. This also has social repercussions, as his son vehemently disapproves of him and breaks from the family.
