You use "a" before a consonant, "an" before a vowel, but it is used before "hour" or "honest" because the Hs are silent. We use "the" to help us talk about things or events.
Exs:
A "C"lock
An "A"pple
The "School"
I hope this helped.

General Rules:Don't Use "a," "an," or "the" with a plural count noun when you mean "some of many things," "any," "in general.
Ex:"
Movies are entertaining (some movies; movies in general).
Ex:He likes women (in general).
