Which areas did the Byzantine Empire rule over at its height? How did the empire's leaders acquire that territory?

Purple is Byzantine.  This came to be when the Romans realized that their empire was too large to rule, so one ruled the red from Rome, and the other ruled the Purple from Constantinople (now Istanbul).  They then slowly separated from each other.
