Sexual reproduction ensures survival for any species. Offspring are formed when genetic material from parents combine to form new genetic codes. Each parent contributes half of a child's DNA through fertilization , which occurs when the sperm and egg of the parents meet. The sperm and egg each contain only half of a parent's genetic information, which makes the child's genetic code different from the parents while maintaining some genetic identity. Each cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes , making it possible for DNA from each parent to be halved to produce the sperm and egg cells; this ensures these cells only receive one copy of a chromosome from each pair. This cell division process is achieved in a process that takes place in the testis and ovaries.
