take the square root of both sides
remember to take the positive and negative root
2x+5=-7 or
2x+5=7
solve each
2x+5=-7
subtract 5
2x=-12
divide 2
x=-6
2x+5=7
subtract 5
2x=2
divid 2
x=1
x=-6 or 1
