Let

x -----> number of roses

y ----> number of carnations

so

we have

x+y=15 -----> x=15-y -----> equation 1

5x+3y=61 -----> equation 2

solve the system

substitute equation 1 in equation 2

5(15-y)+3y=61

solve for y

75-5y+3y=61

2y=75-61

2y=14

y=7

x=15-7

x=8

therefore

roses 8

carnations 7
