if I have a 100 in my geometry class and I get a 17/100 on an assignment and the assignment is worth 20% of my grade, then what percentage would my overall grade be for the class?

So to set this up:

If your new assignment is worth 20% of your grade, then that means that everything else (that you have 100% in) is now worth 80% of your grade.

So now your grade would be described as the following:

80 + some fraction of 20

Which if you get 17% of that 20, is described in the following equation:

20 × .17 = 3.4

So of the 20 points, you've only earned 3.4, so that would make your cumulative grade an 83.4.

To have maintained an A (- or + is irrelevant) you would have needed to score at least 50% on that assignment.
