I don't know if I understand the question the equation is not set equal to anything but if you are solving for y most likely the entire the equation is equal to 0
y-5+3-9(y+2)=0
y-5+3-9y-18=0
-8y-20=0
-8y=20
y=-20/8
However, if you are just trying to simplify it
it will simplify to -8y-20

y-5+3-9(y+2) \\ \\ y - 9(y + 2) - 2 \\ \\ y - 9y - 18 - 2 \\ \\ -8y - 18 - 2 \\ \\ -8y - 20 \\ \\

The answer is: -8y - 20.
