Ernest Rutherford tested J.J. Thomson's hypothesis. Rutherford conducted the "gold foil" experiment. He shot high velocity alpha particles at a thin film of gold atoms. Most of the particles went through, but other deflected. He believed the deflections took place becaise most of the atom's mass was in the nucleus. He discovered the nucleus. He also created a model with protons in a nucleus being orbited by electrons.
