On an archeological field trip, Lucy and Chuck found a total of 92 arrowheads.

If Lucy found 6 more than Chuck, how many did Chuck find?

we know that in total they found 92 arrowheads which means that

x+y=92

we also know that lucy found 6 more than chuck which means taht

x-6=y

Let's solve this through substitution

Looking at the second equation we know exactly what y is equal to in terms of x so we can plug this in (x-6) whenever we see a y in the first equation

so we have

x+(x-6)=92

solve for x and get

2x=98

x=49

Now that we know what x is equal to we can solve for y

49-6=y

y=43

This means that lucy found 49 and chuck found 43
