8/12 is the same as 2/3
x/2 + x/2 = 8/12
2x/2 = 2/3
x = 2/3
another way is:
x/2 + x/2 = 8/12
x/2 + x/2 = 2/3
(2/3)/2 + (2/3)/2 = 2/3
1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3
2/3 = 2/3
