Henry Clay was the Whig Party nominated candidate for the presidential election of 1844. He was up against the expansionist James K. Polk. The Whig Party candidate lost the election of 1944 because he was opposed to the annexation of Texas. This ideology made him lose in the election of the New York state and with it the Whigs lost power in the election of 1844.
