The Main Street Market sells oranges at $3.00 for five pounds and apples at $3.99 for three pounds. The Off Street Market sells oranges at $2.59 for four pounds and apples at $1.98 for two pounds.

FInd the unit price for each item at each store.

Which store has the better buy for oranges? For apples?

Unit price = total price / total quantity:

Main street Market:

Oranges: 3.00 / 5 = 0.60 per pound

Apples: 3.99 / 3 = 1.33 per pound

Off Street Market:

Oranges: 2.59 / 4 = 0.6475 per pound

Apples: 1.98 / 2 = 0.99 per pound

The lower the price per pound the better buy:

Oranges = Main Street Market

Apples = Off Street Market
