When it comes to details specially, scientists found out that eyewitness remember so little of what is actually true and fill in the blanks with false details generated by the brain. This all when the witness is asked about what happened moments after the event.
Considering this knowledge, even though Douglas's account might be correct, it is very unlikely to be the case when it was written 22 years later.
