g(x) = x² - 6
h(x) = x² + 3

g(x) = h(x) + k
x² - 6 = (x² + 3) + k
x² - 6 = x² + 3 + k
- x² - x²
-6 = 3 + k
- 3 - 3
-9 = k

The value of k is -9.
