1. McCarthyism refers to Sen. Joseph McCarthy, who in the mid-50's led an effort to remove communists from the government, and led eventually to a hunt for communists in other private industries, most notably the entertainment industry, forcing individuals to testify in congress at the House UnAmerican Activities Committee.
