In a food chain, only 1% to 2 % of the total available solar energy is transferred to the producers. The rest 98% to 99% of the solar energy is reflected by the leaves and other surfaces on earth, which is then absorbed by some other materials that convert it into heat.

Thus, 1% solar energy is available to the producers in order to synthesize their food in the process called photosynthesis.
