Depends on how long you actually stay in the sun. The sun is actually a good source of vitamin D. But sunscreen with SPF 50 can reduce your risk of getting skin cancer.

UV radiation from the sun has always played an important role in our environment helping plants grow so the answer is no, the radiation from the sun is not ALWAYS harmful.
