Because the north had better equipment to fight the war the south was at a great disadvantages but they still had advantages like most the battles that was fought was an their territory so they didn't had to travel far plus they had better generals.

There wasn't a lot but they had a reason to fight which gave them a will to fight and many good officers was from the South.
