there is 60min in an hour. for an hour and 40min, it would be 60+40 for the total number of minutes over (/) 60. then you can reduce the fraction down. so 100/60=5/3 or 1 and 2/3

an hour has 60 minutes so 1/40 of an hour is:
(1/40)(60) = 60/40 = 6/4 = 3/2 = 1.5
so 1/40 of an hour is a minute and a half
