The group of people that Washington surprised and captured after crossing the Delaware were option C. Hessians. The Hessian soldiers were mercenaries hired by the British to fight colonial forces. They had a large role in the American Revolutionary War. It was December 25, a cold winter, windy and the Delaware River dividing both armies. Washington's troop attacked and the Hessians surrendered.
