Did the French Rev. occur before or after the American Rev?

The French Rev. happened afterwards.
The French were actually inspired by the Americans.
Also Lafayette, the French general that totally kicked British you-know-what, after fighting for the americans, went back to france and fought for france's freedom.

Did the French Rev. occur before or after the American Rev?
