Winston Churchill. for Churchill the monarchy represented not only the apex of our society and constitutional arrangements, but a focus for the loyalty and aspirations of many millions; and with a startling suddenness, the role of that monarchy had to be reinterpreted in the present Queen’s reign to embrace a world-wide Commonwealth. The monarchy signified for him something of infinite value.
