The thing that is produced on the top of the pool of water by the mutual attraction between water molecules is known as surface tension. The surface tension of water is actually what gives water the elastic tendency and allows the water to acquire the least amount of surface area possible. This surface tension is the reason why insects denser than water can slide on the surface of the water.
