Emily, Meghan, and Stephanie saw lighting before they heard thunder. How do you explain the difference between the time they saw the lighting and heard the thunder? (Please answer quickly!!!)

the "Sonic Boom". Lightning and Thunder actually occur at the same time, but because the speed of light travels faster than the speed of sound, you see the lightning, before the sound of the thunder reaches your location. This is why you "count the seconds" between the two to figure out how far away you are from the "storm".

Light travels about 880 THOUSAND times as fast as sound does.
