An air traffic controller tells the pilot of an airplane flying due east to turn the plane so that it has a heading of 120 degrees east of north. What angle does the airplane turn and which direction is the plane now headed?

Due east would be 90 degrees. To turn to 120 degrees the pilot would turn his aircraft 30 degrees to the right of the present heading. The direction of the aircraft would then be ESE, or east, south, east.

Answer: 30 degrees South of East

Explanation:

An airplane was initially flying due East. When air traffic controller told pilot to turn the plane to head 120 degrees east of North which would mean 30 degrees South of East. Refer to the diagram below.

120 degrees - 90 degrees = 30 degrees

The plane is already flying due east. It just needs to turn 30 degrees South of East.
