Simply subtract 38 from both sides,

5y + 38 - 38 = 180 - 38

5y = 142

Divide both sides by 5, to get y

y = 142 / 5 Answer

5y+38=180 \\ \\ 5y=180-38 \\ \\ 5y=142 \\ \\ \boxed{y=(142)/(5)=28.4}
