no established audience,lack of funds,puritans outlawed drama,prejudice against theater as associated with monarchy

During the Colonial Period, the slow development of drama had to do with the severe Puritan control of the times. Besides, drama was something considered as related with the vulgarity and corruption of the King of England and the royal household. As a result, the audience was not interested in it and there was no funding for plays.
