How can you find a unit rate when given a rate?

A unit rate has a denominator of 1, and rate does not. For example, I ran 18 miles in 3 hours. That is a rate of 18 miles/3 hours (18 over 3). To make that a unit rate we have to make the denominator 1, so we divide the top and bottom by 3. The unit rate would be 6 miles/1 hour (6/1).
