How can exponents help you to find the area of a rectangle if each side length is multiplied by X

Umm I can't really explain but like everyone knows that a rectangle had four sides so if each side is multiplied by x then it's going to be that number to the fourth power because you know 4 sides four x's but I not 100% sure just wanted to help out
