What causes jupiter to have so many moons?

first of all, a moon is defined to be a celestial body that makes an orbit around a planet. that's it. nothing more.

Jupiter is a huge planet. therefore, it has a high mass. mass translates into gravitation pull. since Jupiter is relatively close to the astroid belt, anything that gets too close will be pulled in and be considered a "moon" of Jupiter.
