Why are there many alveoli in the lungs?

There is a much greater surface area for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

it is so because :
lungs have to exchange the gases between itself and the surrounding capillaries so for this purpose a larger surface area is required ,, having a large number of alveoli provide large surface area..
