The content and interpretation of the Declaration have been the subject of much academic research. For example, the document justified the independence of the United States by listing the colonial claims against King George III and affirmed certain natural and legal rights, including the right to revolution. After fulfilling its original mission of announcing independence, references to the text of the Declaration were scarce in the following years.

It listed the reasons as to why they wanted to be independent of his rule, they felt that not only did he not know what was truly happening in the colonies he implemented laws without anyone representing them. Over time it grew to be too much and they declared independence.
