Its easier to write the numbers below each other because you can see you're work. It more neat.

Answer:
Usually its easier to subtract numbers written vertically because of the sheer fact that you're just taking away instead of adding on.
it is also easier because by doing that you can easily borrow from the places in front of the number and rewrite without problems. It also helps keep the math more organized so that your work does not confuse you; rather than writing on left and right.
