these two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, through the properties of a transversal, we know tht opposite exterior angles are congruent.
therefore, set the two angles equal to each other.
-1+14x=12x-17
add 1 to both sides
14x=12x-16
subtract 12x from both sides
2x=-16
divide both sides by 2
x=-8
