Kim's team is losing with by a score of 17 to 6. There are 4 innings to go. Kim wants to know how many runs her team needs per inning if the other team does not score. Each run is worth 1 point.

Let r represent the number of runs per inning. Assume that the team scores the same number of runs per inning and write an inequality to determine the number of per inning needed to win the game.

Given:
r = number of runs
4 inning remaining
6 score of Kim's team
17 score of opposing team

4r + 6 > 17 the inequality expression
- 6 -6
4r > 11
÷4 ÷ 4
r > 2.75

The number of runs should be greater than 2.75. It should at least 3 runs per inning.

r = 3

4r + 6 > 17
4(3) + 6 > 17
12 + 6 > 17
18 > 17
