/ mean division so you would take 2 divided by 8 to get 1/4

it is a linear equation with only one unknown, although it looks strange because of the fractions, so lets get rid of the fractions:
2/x = 1/4
(2/x) = (1/4)
4*(2/x) = 1
8/x = 1
8 = 1*x
x = 8
that is the solution
