Answer: The agent that causes mutation in the DNA or chromosomes is called as mutagen. This can be any chemical or physical substance that can change the genetic material generally DNA or chromosome. This increases the frequency of mutation above the natural background level. These mutagens can cause cancer and hence can also be called as carcinogens though it is not always necessary. Mutagens can cause changes in DNA and make it genotoxic that can be fatal for the cells.
