7(x-4) = 84

Use the distributive property

7x - 28 = 84

Add 28 to each side

7x -28 + 28 = 84 + 28
7x = 112

Divide each side by 7 to get x by itself

x = 112/7 = 16

16 people were originally going to go to the movie.
