Cell division is necessary for development from a zygote to a fetus to a child to an adult.  It is also important for the replacement of old, dying cells with new cells.  This is especially important for skin and blood cells, which are replaced often.  When cell division goes wrong and becomes uncontrolled, you end up what is called cancer, and the formation of tumors.  In other words, proper cell division is absolutely necessary for growth and survival.
