Solution

1) The area of the rectangular piece of wood can be found using the area of a rectangle

The area of a rectangle is expressed as length x width

length = 3ft

width = 4ft

Hence the area of the piece of wood before = 3 x 4 = 12 square ft

2)The area of the square that was cut out can be found using the area of a square expressed as

length x length

Length = 2ft

Length = 2ft

Therefore, the area of the cut-out wood = 2 x 2 = 4 square ft
