royal- Were owned by the king (not the people)
Proprietary- basically land grants from the British government. They king would "loan" them out to people who pleased him.
and
self-governing- Were formed when the king granted a "charter" to a joint-stock company . (The king could always take these back and turn it into a Royal colony.)
