A solar eclipse is when the Moon moves directly between the Sun and the Earth. During a solar eclipse, everywhere becomes dark, just like nighttime. Sometimes the Moon covers the whole Sun, and sometimes it only covers part of it.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon and Earth are in direct line, and the moon casts a large shadow onto Earth’s surface.
