The demand of goods such as cotton grew, and Plantations expanded to keep up with the demands, slave numbers grew, and Immigrants from several places came to work.

As the South continued to grow, their reliance on plantations continued to grow with it. The amount of cash crops that the South needed to maintain its economy could only be produced with an enormous labor force to work in the plantations. This meant that slavery became more important, and that the number of slaves continued to increase. It also meant that tensions with the North continued to grow.
