Owning a car has a number of advantages: it allows you to be independent of public transport and of other people and it allows you to go to places that have very bad public transport connection.
On the other hand, owning a car is bad for the environment and often expensive.
Perhaps the best solution, both environmentally and financially is having a shared car with a friend.
