What is the next term in this sequence: -8, 24, -72, 216...?

we notice that they alternate between negative and positive, so maybe exponents

we notice that
-8 times -3=24
24 times -3=-72
-72 times -3=216
therefor the next term is 216 times -3=-648

next term is -648
